Emergence of IT sector in Pakistan
The Information Technology (IT) sector is a career field that has experienced the maximum number of fluctuations and changes in the last decade. Layoffs and pink slips have always been a part of the emerging IT companies in Pakistan with their bases in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad. It is indeed surprising to note that the sector is one of the very few sectors in the country that still calls the shots and contributes in a large way to the GDP figures of the country.
Over the years, Pakistan has been successful in producing quality software engineers and other IT professionals along with the rich array of quality products and services related to the IT industry. In fact the sector has boomed in such a way that most of the qualified software professionals have dumped their dreams to work abroad and decided to look for jobs in Pakistan. Although the number of foreign companies that have planned to invest in the country is small, the number is expected to go up in the years to come.
With more and more employee benefits and tax exemptions being provided to the job seekers by the government, the growth in the sector is expected to escalate in the future. More and more jobs will be generated in the process thereby restricting unemployment to significantly low levels. The major IT companies comprise of telecom companies, call centers, web development, solution providers and software houses. With recession levels expected to decrease in the few years to come, employment levels are expected to shoot up thus keeping a significant portion of the country’s people employed and skilled. Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad are the three major cities that come up with most of the jobs in Pakistan. This also explains the migration of a large number of people from the rural settlements to urban areas and townships.
